HARI Clay-Cal Bentonite Clay Supplement

In the wild, some bird species, such as parrots, instinctively flock to rock outcrops, or clay licks, where they go to detoxify their digestive systems after consuming toxic food or to add missing nutrients to their diet. This process is called geophagia, which is the consumption of soil or clay for dietary benefit.

Avian experts have observed the geophagia activities of several species of wild parrots at clay licks all over the world, including the Manu Cliffs in Peru. Experts believe that consuming clay provides supplemental minerals, such as calcium, that may be lacking in natural diets, as well as helps eliminate dietary toxins in digestive systems.

Domestic birds need to detox like their wild counterparts

You would think not. After all, responsible bird-keepers provide their pet birds with healthy food and a safe environment with no poisonous plants or toxic substances – an ideal setting that is very different from wild birds. But is this enough to protect pet birds against dietary toxins? The answer is no.

Benefits of Clay for Pet Birds

Companion birds can greatly benefit from daily consumption of a calcium-enriched detoxifier, such as HARI Clay-Cal.

Clay-Cal is a clay product that combines the detoxifying benefits of bentonite clay and charcoal with calcium. One of the primary benefits of bentonite clay, specifically montmorillonite clay which has a superior ability to absorb toxins, is its beneficial effect on countering dietary toxins by binding toxic chemicals and bacteria.

Because of the clay’s ability to act as an antacid, Clay-Cal can protect the gut lining from corrosion. This alone improves food intake as it protects the GI tract from chemical and biological irritation.

Pet birds who are regularly supplied with fresh tree branches for perching, chewing and shredding activities will also benefit from using Clay-Cal. While the wood source is perfectly safe, some of the tannins found in the wood bark can contain secondary compounds toxins.

Clay-Cal helps companion birds deal with possible toxins found in the branches. Its elevated pH level plays a critical role in the bird’s ability to remain healthy and resist disease.

Daily Exposure to Household Toxins

There are multiple household chemicals that come from floors, carpets, and cleansing agents. In addition, think about the possible pesticides and additives found on fresh fruits and vegetables. How about genetically modified food items? HARI Clay-Cal won’t undo a severe toxic exposure–but will help birds deal with the casual exposure that often goes undetected in everyday life.

Source of Calcium

Let’s not forget the calcium benefits as well. As seed diets are low in calcium, supplementing with calcium-enriched Clay-Cal helps with healthy bone development. Clay-Cal also helps with the normal development and maintenance of the nervous system, muscle and cardiac functions, and blood clotting.

All in all, a healthy diet combined with a calcium-enriched supplement like Clay-Cal can be very beneficial for the overall health and well-being of all companion bird species.
